Melanie - Neon & Car Trails

This photo was taken in Tumwater between 9:00 p.m. & 9:15 p.m. and turned into an HDR.  I liked the vintage look of the South Gate Sign.  All three bracketed photos were taken with ISO 100, f-13, and the White Balance was incandescent, and all are from a raw file.  The first one was taken for 1 second at exposure 0 step, the second was taken for 1/2 second at -1 step, and the third was taken at 2 seconds at +1 step.  I also used a remote control with the mirror up to reduce blur.  This was my first ever attempt at neon and car trails.  Traffic was light so I didn't get the red trails like I would have liked, and it was hard keeping the headlights out of the shot, but I'm happy with it anyway.  On the computer, I changed all the sliders myself instead of using a preset.  I'm hoping that the class thinks it turned out ok.  I didn't really know what I was doing.

  1. Really like all the different neon colors against the pretty blue of the sky. Nice!

  2. LOVE that you experiment even though YOU don't THINK you know what you are doing!!!! You captured the sky at the perfect time. The tungsten blue color is excellent in emphasizing the organic and geometric shapes/forms that with a darker sky would be lost and flatten out the space in the scene. One way to get more car trails is to ask a friend to drive back and forth thru the scene. ALTHOUGH the lack of car trails, creates a story about the image/location/time of day. What do think about the sign on the right being clipped off the edge of the frame? If you had included the entire sign with a little negative space on the right, would it have made a difference in the composition? Did you shoot this scene from various corners of the street ? As I was reading your tagline, I was reminiscing about how far you have come with your photography! :-)

    1. Funny you should mention the negative space. The orginal photos did have more space on the right side. What I didn't realize when I was taking the shot was how crooked it was. I wound up straightening it out in Corel Paint Shop and thus cut off the right edge. Why I didn't realize it was off in the first place, I don't know. I checked the tripod and it said it was straight, but I should have paid closer attention to the actual shot. I broke the cardinal rule! No I didn't shoot from other points for that sign. I got there an hour early and scouted where I wanted to be and just stayed there. I did try some other shots of buildings with neon lights around it, but my goal was primarily this sign. I also did some closeups of the sign. There were a few I liked, but I thought this was the one that I liked best. I like the night photography and am thinking about buying a cable so I can do the longer exposures. The painting with light was so much fun.
