The first 2 pics were of the "super moon" Lens was 70-200mm w/2X extender. Last pic was Sat night about 9:30pm, used my 100-400mm w/2X. First 2 pics were handheld, looking thru viewfinder, last night was tripod, using live view. Tonight and Monday I'll change up different settings to experiment, keep it on the tripod and try the wireless remote. I also turned off image stabilizer and when I use the 100-400 lens w/extender I have to manually focus.
I LIKE how you are experimenting with settings/WB/gear. DID you choose tungsten WB for a reason? What are other challenges/considerations/successes you have experienced with your moon shots that you can share with the class? Now that you are getting around to finding the 'sweet spot' on the camera settings, what can you do or add to the composition to make it a more compelling image?
I liked the bluish coloring of the moon when the Tungsten setting was used. I had experimented w/AWB and cloudy setting prior to Tungsten and felt I wasn't getting enough contrast or detail of the moon surface. I felt with Tungsten I was getting more detail/contrast so I could see the craters and that little "belly button" spot on the moon at the 4 o'clock position on the moon face. The challenges from last night were a lot of fast cloud covering the moon at times which I had to wait on until I could get a more detailed image. I was in too much of a hurry last night to take a shot and fumbling too much with dialing in different settings to experiment, so I sat down with the camera today to make sure I can adjust the settings better when I'm outside in the dark. I also was in such a rush I forgot to hook up the wireless remote. Tonight I'm going to be more patient and have everything ready before I walk outside, including the setting I want to start out with, have the remote hooked up and also experiment with bracketing which I've never tried before. The 2x teleconverter does not let me auto focus with the 100-400 lens so I need to be more thoughtful on my manual focusing. The 70-200mm lens will auto focus w/the 2x teleconverter but I think I like the detail of the moon images with the longer 400mm lens using the 2x teleconverter.
