I have to agree with Melanie, the pencils with the salt water fizz offered opportunities for some neat shots. This was taken with the macro setting of my 28-90mm, ISO 800, f/16 and 1/50 sec.
You KNOW I scrutinize these images and zoom in to check focus. Great composition, love the 'pastel-ness' of the color. For me, I'd like to see the image sharper. 1/50sec seems a little slow for the existing light and handholding.. What focal length did you use?
I agree. Sometimes when I am shooting find that I don't get quite as sharp as I anticipated because I have the shutter speed set too slow, even when I think the image should be ok. I think I had it on shutter priority so the f/16 stop was chosen while I tried to chose a shutter speed that wouldn't be too dark. But f/16 does seem like a rather narrow aperture. The data says that my 28-90mm was set to 92mm (its macro setting). I need to take the time to ensure that I've figured out other adjustments so I can use a faster shutter speed. I looked back through the series and only one at this setting seemed sharper, the rest suffered the same issue. Suggestions welcome!
SO for handholding, your shutter speed should have been 'at least' 1/125 sec to closely match the focal length (92mm). Guideline is 1:1 - focal length=shutter speed.
Better yet, on still life set ups like this, a tripod with mirror locked up, and remote shutter cable is ESSENTIAL and will ensure 'tack' sharp images.
Remember your macro on your telephoto may not be true macro unless it can focus in at a very close range and achieve 1:1 life size images. Your 92mm macro setting, may just be a closeup focal length. If you haven't already, check your lens specs so you know.
