Cornelia K - Week 2, Night/Low Light Photography

Bellevue skyline with "car light trails," this is looking west at about 10 pm. (1.3 sec. at F/5.6, 60 mm).

For this night image I used the "zoom technique" with the same settings, tripod, and location.

"Low light" situation, the shot was taken earlier around 8 pm, when there was a strong directional light behind the camera, used "zoom" technique (.6 sec. at F/20). I like the resulting "dreamy" effect.

The moon was looking full Saturday night but hard to see with the nearly solid cloud cover. Here the silky effect is from the fast moving clouds and sphere detail naturally filtered by the clouds, during the long exposure. Luckily the clouds were chunky and moving. I just had to wait for the next break and hit the shutter release to catch the movement (5.0 seconds at F/6.3, 300 mm prime, with teleconverter).

Okay, one more. I don't like this photo at all but I probably learned the most from it, my first attemped to "paint with light." My flash light was small but the light too strong. This may have been more interesting if I had used a gel of some sort and avoided the background light interference. Next time...

  1. I like your Bellevue skyline. The light trails and the blue sky really completes the photo. The hills in the background are a nice touch.
